    Overview

    The Salkantay trek is a high altitude 74km/46 miles hike in the Cusco region, Peru.

    The route starts at Mollepata, a small town 100km from Cusco. It takes you through some incredible nature areas of the Andes with breathtaking scenery and amazing wildlife. Trekking includes a visit to two Inca sitesLlactapata and Machu Picchu both history and nature lovers will enjoy the Salkantay trek.  It is considered to be a cheaper alternative to the famous Inca trail though it goes through the completely different areas and unlike the Inca trail, Salkantay trek finishes in Aguas Calientes (from where you walk to MP) not at Machu Picchu

    Itinerary

    Day 1 : CUSCO – SORAYPAMPA.

    We start the day picking you up from your hotel from 4:30 AM. Then we will go on a tourist bus passing through the towns of Izcuchaca and Limatambo arriving at Mollepata (2900m.snm), where we will be at approximately 7:30 AM. There, we will have our first breakfast and we can leave our 7 kilos luggage for our riders. We will then take a transport that will take us to Challacancha for 1 hour (3380m.snm). From that point our trek will begin, reaching Soraypampa (3900m.snm) in approximately 3 hours, where we will be arriving at 1:30 pm. There we will have our first lunch and first camp. After lunch we will go to the beautiful Humantay lagoon.

    LAGUNA HUMANTAY: Ascent for 1:30 minutes where we will arrive at the impressive Humantay Lagoon (4220 masl). There we can appreciate the turquoise color of the lagoon and the snowy Apu Humantay and then begin to descend for 40 minutes to our Soraypampa camp for tea time, which is at approximately 6:00 pm. Then we will have our delicious dinner prepared by our chef and finally we will pass to our tents or sleeping tents.

    Day 2 :SORAYMAPA – SALKANTAY – CHAULLAY

    Starting at 5:00 am we will have a nutritious breakfast and then continue our trek. We start from Soraypamapa point to the highest point Abra Salkantay (3 hours) where we can appreciate the imposing snowfalls of the Salkantay mountains, Humantay, Tucarhuay and Pumasillo (4650m.snm), through Salkantaypampa and Soyrococha, where we will appreciate a small lagoon then begin the descent to Huayracmachay (3 hours)

    (3800m.s.n.m). At Huayracmachay, we will have our lunch and then continue the walk. You will notice a dramatic change in the landscape. This walk is really impressive after we continue down to Chaullay (3 hours) (2900m.s.n.m), where our second camp will be

    Day 3 :CHAULLAY – SAHUAYACO BEACH – SANTA TERESA

    We will have our breakfast at 6:00 am, and then walk around 5:30 hours all through the jungle eyebrow with flat ascents and descents. We will appreciate coffee plantations, orchids, begoneas, bromeliads and many natural plants used for medicine, arriving at our Playa Sahuayaca lunch point where we will have the “buffet” lunch and board a bus which is included from the lunch point to the camp (Playa – Santa Teresa). Arriving at our camp we will have the option to visit the thermal baths located in Cocalmayo (Santa Teresa) that are not included in our package and we return to our camp at 6:00 pm, for our tea and dinner.

    Day 4:SANTA TERESA –HIDROELECTRICA-AGUAS CALIENTES:

    The sunrise will be within a tropical area full of history and nature. There our breakfast awaits us and then we will continue our journey towards Hydroelectric station where we will have lunch in the restaurant. After lunch, we will continue our walk through the tropical zone towards the town of hot springs and accommodate ourselves in the hostel and wait for dinner at 6.30 pm.

    Day 5 : AGUAS CALIENTES- MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO

    We will get up very early in the morning to visit Machu Picchu, where we will have a guided tour of the citadel of Machu Picchu and visit temples, terraces, palaces and platforms. Then you will have time to take pictures and explore on your own.

    You will return to the town of Aguas Calientes to wait for your Expedition train at 6:20 PM

    Note: If in case you have Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu mountain, you would be entering the first schedule from 6AM – 8AM and second schedule from 9AM – 11AM

    (Not included in the Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain package)
